TraineesIt is now almost axiomatic that people entering the profession will engage in formal training aimed at a post-graduate qualification. Training can take place in an academic institution or in the workplace but there must be planning, advice, supervision and assessment if a trainee is to have the best chance of success. There are several people concerned with trainees in veterinary pathology in the UK and Europe, although most of their activities are relatively informal. At present there is no national co-ordination of post-graduate education for residents and trainees engaged in on-the-job training in the UK. TheRoyal College of Pathologistshas two trainees' representatives on their Veterinary Pathology Specialty Advisory Committee; one for anatomic and one for clinical pathology. In addition, the Toxicology Specialty Advisory Committee has a trainees' representative. Their work is considered to be very important for the co-ordination of activities suitable for those wishing to become members of the College. The trainee representatives are likely to be the most useful contact on a day-to-day basis for most people wishing to take the College examinations. You can contact them through the Royal College of Pathologists Veterinary Pathology SAC by contacting the College web site. The trainees' representatives are able to communicate between the universities, employers and examining bodies to help coordinate the educational and pastoral activities required to ensure that all candidates have the best possible chance of success. |
