Food IndustryPathology research in the food industry is relatively small in comparison to the pharmaceutical sector but still represents an employment opportunity for veterinary pathologists. Large companies are involved in the research of new food components and to support healthy alternatives (e.g. fat and sugar replacements) and the development of the so-called 'nutraceuticals' - foodstuffs with a beneficial effect on health (e.g. cholesterol lowering). Smaller companies are also actively involved in developing new components for use in the food industry. In some countries, some herbal compounds are regarded as foodstuffs and there have been concerns with regard to their safety and efficacy in man. |
