Agrochemical Industry

The agrochemical industry has undergone a significant contraction in recent years but there is still a need for pathology expertise in a field that requires a slightly different approach to that of the pharmaceutical industry.

Although these companies have traditionally dealt with herbicides and pesticides, biotechnology products have appeared as a significant factor including the development of genetically modified crops. Instead of presenting data to support clinical trials, toxicity studies are aimed at supporting risk assessment data for potential exposure of man to crop residues or accidental contamination. As with the pharmaceutical companies, there are pressing deadlines for reports although they are usually aimed at crop trials and registration before defined crop seasons.

Study designs are slightly different from pharmaceutical studies and the range of pathological lesions is different and issues such as neurotoxicity, immunotoxicity, environmental issues and endocrine disruption are probably more prominent than in other sectors of industry.
