The Scottish Agricultural College's Veterinary ServiceThe SAC Veterinary Servicehas eight disease surveillance centres thorughout Scotland (Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Auchincruive, Dumfries, Inverness, Perth, St Boswell's and Thurso). Veterinary Investigation Officers at those centres carry out gross post mortem procedures of farm livestock, companion animals and poultry and a range of other laboratory examinations including clinical pathology. A smaller number of SAC pathologists at the Edinburgh Centre are involved in histopathological examinations of both farm and companion animal material. There are close links between SAC staff and veterinary pathologists working at the Moredun Research Institute. The Moredun Research InstituteThe Moredun Research Institutebased at Bush Loan, Penicuik, Midlothian conducts research on infectious diseases of animals and has produced vaccines and diagnostic tests for livestock. The Institute has a specialist Pathology Unit including full-time veterinary pathologists and scientific support staff. In addition to research, Moredun's pathology unit, in partnersip with SAC-VS carries out histopathological surveillance of neuropathological and reproductive conditions of farm animals and marine mammals in Scotland. |
