Examinations

At the moment there are several post-graduatequalifications that are recognised in the UK, which can be obtained at the end of a residency or on-the-job training period. Membership of the Royal College of Pathologists (MRCPath) consists of two parts and is most often chosen by those undertaking on-the-job training or those looking for a specialised qualification.

Examinations are also offered by the ECVP,ECVCPand ACVP and these are most attractive to those working in academia and offer a broadly-based qualification. Both have similar formats and there is some degree of mutual recognition between Europe and the USA, which can be important when considering an international career.

In all case the standards are high and require committed training and appropriate supervision. A minimum training period is often required, which may vary from three to five years depending on the place of training and the supervision received.
